Charlie Pritchard Demonstration
June 6th at St. Edward's University, Charlie Pritchard of Luling
Ice House Pottery demonstrated his throwing techniques.
Charlie studied with the traditional potters of North Carolina and learned
about the beauty of making unpretentious, but elegant, functional pots. He
showed us the technique of wrapping a dark colored clay coil around a lighter
clay body to produce a swirled pattern of alternating clay colors. Charlie
talked about his evolution as an artist and potter. He shared his experiences
of trying to combine his artistic goals with the challenge of making a living
as a potter. We ended the evening with two short films Charlie brought about
traditional potters of North Carolina and Georgia. The GACA members were
delighted and impressed with the work and work ethic displayed by Charlie's
predecessors. We especially enjoyed watching their mule driven clay mixer.
